Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that look just like the front part of your visible teeth. They’re permanently sealed to the front of your teeth, where they effectively cover up any cosmetic imperfections to give you a perfect-looking smile.

Because porcelain has a similar color and translucency as your natural tooth enamel, veneers look just like natural teeth, giving you a smile that looks as beautiful as it does authentic.

What conditions do veneers treat?

Veneers cover up the entire front part of your teeth, treating virtually any aesthetic issue you might have with your teeth, including:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Tooth surfaces that are excessively worn-down
  • Stains that haven’t responded to whitening treatments
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth with large gaps between them
  • Teeth that are too small or too large

Veneers are also occasionally used for non-cosmetic purposes, as well, like reinforcing a compromised tooth to protect it from further damage.

What is the process of getting veneers?

Your journey towards a better smile with veneers begins with a consultation at Horizon Dental. You and your dentist discuss your issues with your current smile and what you hope to achieve from veneers.

Next, you select a size, shape, and color for your veneers. Your dentist will help you pick a set of veneers that best compliments your other cosmetic qualities, like your:

  • Skin tone
  • Hair color
  • Size, shape, and color of your lips and gums
  • Facial features

Once you’ve selected your veneers, your dentist shaves a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth — just enough to make room for the veneers, which are wafer-thin. After your teeth are prepared for the veneers, your dentist takes an impression of your smile and sends them off to a lab where your veneers will be constructed to fit perfectly and comfortably in your mouth.

You come back for another visit when your veneers are back from the lab. Your dentist applies a special cleansing liquid to your teeth before fitting on your veneers with dental cement. They finish your procedure by shining a special curing light to harden the bond.

You leave the office with a gorgeous new smile that will last for 10-15 years with proper brushing, flossing, and dental visits.
