Nitrous Oxide Q & A

Why do dentists use nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing gas, is an odorless and colorless gas administered via a nasal mask. The gas helps reduce your anxiety so you can relax. Additionally, nitrous oxide acts as an anesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain.

The advantages of using nitrous oxide include:

  • Safe for children and adults
  • Most people tolerate it well
  • Effects wear off after you take off the mask

Nitrous oxide is fast-acting, so once you breathe it in, you begin feeling its effects. Your dentist provides you with a steady stream of nitrous oxide to maintain the effects.

What sedation options do dentists offer?

At Horizon Dental, there are three sedatives to help you relax during your dental work, including:

Local sedation

Local sedation is for you if you don’t like going to the dentist because of a fear of needles and the pain associated with it. The dentists use a tool called DentalVibe®, which applies a light vibration to block pain signals from the brain.

By using DentalVibe simultaneously while injecting local anesthesia, you’ll have a pleasant experience.

Nitrous oxide

If you have a fear of going to the dentist and become anxious, nitrous oxide gas could be for you. While nitrous oxide doesn’t put you to sleep, it does help you relax by putting you into a calming state.

Halcion is a pill that you can take one hour prior to your dental procedure. The dental team takes extra precaution when supplying you with Halcion and monitors your pulse and blood pressure throughout your procedure.

If you choose to take Halcion, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

How safe is nitrous oxide?

According to the American Dental Association, nitrous oxide is the most commonly used gas-form anesthetic in the world. It’s considered safe for children and adults because it doesn’t carry significant side effects. Because the effects of nitrous oxide wear off shortly after taking off your nasal mask, you’ll be able to drive yourself back home.

If you don’t like going to the dentist because it makes you nervous, nitrous oxide gas can help you relax during your visit. To learn more about nitrous oxide, call the dental staff at Horizon Dental or book your appointment online today.
