Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a revolutionary orthodontic treatment that improves the alignment of your smile and bite with a series of clear, plastic aligners. Your aligners are made from an impression of your smile and fit snugly over your teeth, exerting a small but constant amount of pressure that gradually pushes your teeth into proper alignment.

With over 6 million satisfied smiles worldwide, Invisalign has quickly become a popular orthodontic alternative to traditional metal braces.

What conditions does Invisalign treat?

Invisalign is an effective treatment for many of the same conditions that have traditionally fixed with braces, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth
  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite

Many patients also choose to use Invisalign to generally straighten their teeth and cosmetically enhance their smile.

How do I get started with Invisalign?

The team at Horizon Dental takes an impression of your mouth that’s used to create a virtual model of your smile in a computer program. Your virtual smile is manipulated to create a roadmap that details all of the necessary steps your teeth need to take in order to arrive in proper alignment.

Each one of those steps is turned into a set of clear aligners — one each for your top and bottom arches of teeth. On average, most patients need about 20 to 30 sets of aligners in their series.

You wear your aligners every day for at least 22 hours a day, taking them out only to brush, floss, or eat. You move on to a new set of aligners every two weeks as your teeth progressively get closer towards their target alignment. Some patients finish treatment in as little as nine months.

How is Invisalign better than braces?

As an orthodontic treatment, Invisalign has a number of advantages over traditional metal braces, including:

Comfort

Your aligners are made of smooth, flexible plastic, so they won’t tear up the inside of your mouth like braces do.

Convenience

Unlike braces, Invisalign’s aligners are removable, meaning you won’t have to change your diet during treatment or learn special techniques for cleaning your teeth. Simply pop out your aligners, brush, floss, and eat as normal, and pop them back in afterward.

Discretion

Your aligners are virtually invisible on your smile, unlike the mouthful-of-metal look that you’d have to endure with braces.
