Bridges Q & A

What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is an excellent way to “bridge” the gap created by one or more consecutive missing teeth. It consists of one or more false teeth, known as pontics, surrounded on both sides by abutment teeth. Your dentist places crowns on your abutment teeth to hold the pontics in place.

While dental bridges aren’t purely cosmetic, the dental laboratory makes them from porcelain so they blend in with your surrounding teeth.

What are the benefits of a dental bridge?

Dental bridges provide multiple benefits, such as:

  • Providing you with an aesthetically pleasing smile
  • Restoring your ability to speak and pronounce your words
  • Preserving the shape of your jaw and face
  • Distributing the force of your bite when your chew
  • Restoring your ability to properly chew

Another important function of a bridge is to fill in the gaps left by your missing teeth is so your surrounding teeth don’t drift out of position. By opting for a dental bridge, that won’t happen.

What’s the process of getting a dental bridge?

To begin, your dentist provides you with a sedative, which can include a local anesthetic, nitrous oxide, or the oral pill Halcion™. Afterward, your dentist prepares your abutment teeth by shaving off a portion of the enamel. This is done to create room for the crowns, which support your prosthetic teeth.

Your dentist then takes impressions of your teeth to create the custom-fit crowns and your pontics. In the meantime, your dentist provides you with a temporary bridge.

On your second visit to Horizon Dental, your dentist removes your temporary bridge and makes sure your permanent one fits comfortably.

How do I care for a dental bridge?

The Horizon Dental team recommends you practice proper oral health habits such as brushing your teeth at least twice a day along with flossing and using mouthwash daily. It’s also important for you to visit Horizon Dental semiannually for your dental checkup. With proper care, your dental bridge can last 10-15 years.
